Falken Tire’s famous ‘Camo’ Porsche 911 RSR is Ready to Eat the Competitors
The Falken Porsche will make its final IMSA appearance at the 2015 Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta, Sept. 30 – Oct. 3. While that means retirement for the distinctive Falken livery, there’s another chapter in Falken’s racing history connected to Petit LeMans that everyone has a chance to celebrate.
At the 2013 running of Petit Le Mans, the Falken Tire team created one of the most surprising sports car racing stories of the year. Drivers Wolf Henzler, Bryan Sellers and Nick Tandy staged a brilliant come-from-behind win at Road Atlanta to score the team’s first-ever Petit Le Mans victory during the final race of the American Le Mans Series.
The win was an especially sweet victory in more ways than one. The team’s new-spec Porsche 911 RSR had been destroyed in a crash at the Baltimore Grand Prix earlier, forcing Walker Racing to pull the retired, 2010-spec Porsche 911 RSR out of their California headquarters lobby and prepare it for battle. And, thanks to a contest held by Falken Tire via the Forza Motorsport community, it looked ready to wage war on wheels. Wrapped in a camouflage grey paint scheme with an open shark mouth that mimicked a WWII fighter aircraft, this Falken Porsche definitely meant business.
Just in time to celebrate Falken’s great racing track record, Falken Tire partner HPI Racing has released its new RS4 Sport 3 Flux, featuring those famously aggressive graphics. The 1/10th scale radio control car, which can achieve blistering speeds of up to 70mph, also comes with a set of replica Falken AZENIS racing tires.
"I loved the fan-designed camo paint scheme when we ran it on the car at Petit Le Mans,” said Sellers. “I also love the HPI Racing line of cars and the R/C hobby. So, to have those two things come together is pretty cool. This is the second HPI Team Falken Tire Porsche that I've been honored to have my name on so it is special for that reason too. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it when we have some time at home to play."
Of course, the story with that particular Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR isn’t just about one victory at Petit Le Mans. That same full-scale car scored Falken Tire’s first sports car victory in the pouring rain at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2011 – and followed it up with another victory at the Baltimore Grand Prix mere weeks later.
“With that car, we won three races and they were all memorable and historic wins for the Falken Tire team,” said Sellers. “We had to revive the car for Petit, and maybe it was something that shouldn’t have worked, but it did. We had issues early in the race, we went down two laps, but we came back. We had a great pit stop which got us to the middle of the field and then we drove to the front and led the last four hours. And it was extra special to have a fan design the car, and then have that design end up in victory lane.”
